Chapter Fourteen

On the morning of the last-minute Louper tryouts for Rob’s temporarily open spot on the team, Amanda was up and out of bed at lighting speeds. She hardly tasted the foulness of the Fatethistle tincture before shoving everything back under the duffel bag and sweaters in her bottom drawer and jamming her feet into her sneakers.

Even at breakfast, she couldn’t sit still while her friends took their time with their meal. Hers disappeared in five minutes, and she downed two full glasses of orange juice before finally feeling relatively full.

Grace laughed and poured more syrup on her pancakes. “That probably wasn’t the best idea.”

“What do you mean?” Amanda tied her hair back in a tight ponytail and swiped the toast crumbs onto her paper plate.

“You just drank a quart of juice right before Louper tryouts.”

“So?”

“Physical activity? Muscle cramps?” Grace looked around the table and only got blank stares from the rest of their friends. “Am I the only one who knows about these things?”

“It’s fuel, Grace.” Amanda grinned at her and stood from the table. “I’ll be fine.”

“Until you puke on the field,” Alex added.

Summer pointed at her. “Hey, if you do, try to aim it at LeFor’s shoes, huh? He won’t be able to do shit about it, ’cause you’ll still be the best pick for the team.”

Jackson snorted into his orange juice and snatched up a napkin to keep from dripping the rest of it all over his lap.

“I’m not puking on anyone, and I don’t get cramps.” Amanda grabbed her plate and cup and shot Grace a winning smile. “I could eat a five-course dinner and still go for a run afterward. I guess it’s a shifter thing.”

“Of course, it is.” The blonde witch laughed and attempted to feign surprise. “Who would’ve thought she could explain away all her special skills as a shifter thing ?”

“I mean…” Jackson looked from Grace to Amanda and back again. “Kinda obvious, isn’t it?”

“That was sarcasm, Jackson.”

“Oh.”

“Okay, guys, I gotta go.” Amanda came back from tossing her trash and dumping her cup in the bus tub. “Wish me luck.”

“Like you need it, shifter girl.” Summer gave her a thumbs-up.

“Wait, I thought the tryouts started in fifteen minutes,” Grace said.

“Yeah. I’m gonna go warm up!” Tossing her hand in the air for a last-minute wave, Amanda jogged across the outdoor cafeteria. She couldn’t get out to the training field fast enough.

“We’ll be there!” Jackson shouted after her when she was halfway to the field.

Alex pressed a fist to his mouth and forced a fake cough. “Delayed response.”

“What? No, I was keeping the support going.” The wizard shrugged. “Just because she’s all the way over there doesn’t mean she can’t hear me. You know that.”

Summer stood with her plate in hand and clapped her hand on his shoulder to give him a little shake. “Sometimes, Romeo, the best way to try is just to stop trying.”

She didn’t let him respond before she spun away to throw out her trash.

Jackson’s mouth worked open and closed.
